The old overgrown railway line in "the middle of nowhere" aroused my curiosity, so I asked some passers-by what it was for. They told me that there used to be a barracks here, so I did some research at home: The Molenheide domain used to be a hermetically sealed ammunition depot of the Belgian army. After reorganization at the end of the last century, that function was abolished and in 2006 the domain was expropriated as a valuable nature reserve and came under the management of the Nature and Forest Agency of the Flemish government. Part of the domain is still protected and may not be entered. I couldn't find out whether this is because of military matters or because of nature management...

A somewhat outdated information board at the parking lot of the Holsteenbron campsite provides text and explanation about the past of the Molenheide ammunition depot and its transition to an "exceptional nature reserve" (see photos).
