The pit, formerly known as the Termolen dump because it was located close to the former dump on the Molenheide domain, was only included for the first time in the Superprestige of February 2010. And all thanks to Tom Meeusen and his teammates from Telenet-Fidea who deviated from the course during a training ride and thus ended up at 'De Kuil'. On Meeusen's recommendation to the organiser, this 'Kuil' was subsequently included in the Zonhoven cyclocross course.

Historical interpretation: The sand pit is a former sand quarry that was created during the extraction of sand and production of wet sand. Wet sand was used to make sand asphalt. This was used to construct pavements such as driveways and playgrounds at schools.
