Like the candlestick figures or the pyramid, the candle arch also became a symbol for Christmas goods from the Ore Mountains. The name comes from an architectural component known as a "Schwib-" or "Schwebebogen": an arch that appears to be floating freely between two walls. As a light bearer, it has its origins in the mining tradition. It was customary in the Ore Mountains for the miners to meet together on December 24th for prayer and a happy "Mineral Christmas Eve". They hung their burning miner's lamps to indicate the entrance to the tunnel in a semicircle on a wall or directly at the mouth of the tunnel. This gave rise to the idea and form of a freely erectable arc of lights with candles placed on top.
