This small square with the fishing peat and the octagonal auction house first bore the name Nieuwe Vismarkt. The house sold the fish and shrimps. Fish walkers took place on the fish banks. The baskets with fish and shrimps were placed in the fishing bed.
Here you can still experience the atmosphere of yesteryear.

This Gothic House was built in 1555 and is also called the Karel V House. Emperor Charles granted a tax exemption, which made it possible to rebuild the building after the city fire of 1554. Above the door is the coat of arms of Charles V. The building housed the Historical Museum de Bevelanden from 1930 to 1970.

This quay is called the Turfkade because of the supply of peat for heating the houses and the fuel for under the salt pans in the salt chain. In the pavement, between the fishing area and the quay, you can still see a gray bluestone stone that indicates the place where the peat was weighed. This location is now a mooring place for pleasure craft. Nice location to shoot photos with a rich background.
