Here you get a good impression of the fundamental character of the Emsland moorland. The inmates of the Emsland camps, including the nearby camp II Aschendorfermoor, were mainly forced to undergo physically unbearable cultivation in these moors. The bogs were turned over with the simplest of tools (the lowest was turned upwards, the deep layer of Ortstein was broken so that the moors could dehydrate). Above all, the work should be the hardest punishment to break any resistance, any opposition. The conditions of concentration camps also prevailed in the prisoner-of-war camps. Machines (huge steam plows) that had been used during the Weimar Republic were sold.
