Papenburg is definitely worth seeing. If you do not really want to see the transfer of one of the ships of the Meyer shipyard, you should come here at other times, as many visitors are already on the road during this time, who are camping in Papenburg itself and along the Ems. But of course, this is also a worth seeing event.
The main canal in the long-drawn-out fen colony of Papenburg is the center and heart of the city, if not geographically, but culturally and socially, even if it is not very easy in a former fen colony like Papenburg, which consists of two parts, with Aschendorf even three parts define where the heart is. Of course, every part of the city has its own idea.
It's not a typical pedestrian zone like you see everywhere. The street is equipped with some optical delicacies and in any case unique and worth seeing in its own way.
It is a part motorable street, part pedestrian zone, which moves on both sides of a canal through the center of the Unterenende in Papenburg.
In any case, the main canal begins at the end of Bahnhofstrasse/Hofskanal, crosses Deverweg, Kirchstrasse (B 70), and Russelstrasse/Hermann-Lange-Strasse. It ends at the corner of Wiek and Gasthauskanal.
Coming from the train station, on the way to the main canal, you can see not only the Hotel Rüther, but also some of the city's historic buildings and the old production site of the Kolbenschmidt company on the corner of the Hoffskanal, before the main canal begins. Various sights can be found on both sides of the canal, with the majority of them to the right of the main canal.
It begins immediately with the Hotel and Forum Alte Werft on the right-hand side as well as the Boilerworks. The Meyer shipyard used to build its ships here. A little further on is the old shipyard, the time storage facility that is further back and the old Drostei.
Once you have crossed the Deverweg, you pass the old post office and the district court before you can see the mill forecourt and on the right side the pretty Meyers mill, behind which the city park stretches.
After reaching the Nikolaikirche, you can also see the Kuff Margareta, a replica of a typical Papenburg coastal ship, on the main canal.
On the left side of the main canal we find a memorial stone for the Jewish synagogue destroyed in the Kristallnacht. It seems to be a Papenburg case to build a bank on the site of the synagogue after the Second World War. More empathy in urban planning would have been nice too.
Crossing the federal highway 70, which is called Kirchstraße here, we find three sights: the historic town hall, the museum ship Frederike von Papenburg and the Sankt Antonius church.
In the further course we find the Villa Diekhaus, in which the adult education center is located and the Sankt Marien hospital. While the street continues at its end in a straight line with the inn canal, the canal now runs northwards over the "Wiek", which in turn leads via the central canal to the splitting and thus through the upper end. On the Wiek, however, after 200 m we find another replica of a historic ship: the Katharina von Papenburg.
