In the center of the square is the statue of King Pelayo, who is believed to have led the resistance against the Muslim invasion in the 8th century. Around the square are several historic buildings, including the Clock Tower, the Revillagigedo Palace, and the San Pedro church. In the square there are also many bars, cafes and restaurants where you can enjoy Asturian gastronomy, including the local cider.

The Plaza Mayor was designed in 1852 and the town hall was completed in 1867. The square, rectangular and cobbled, is porticoed on two sides.
This square hosts different events throughout the year, such as craft markets (the second weekend of each month), fairs, concerts, proclamations (such as the Semana Grande, Antroxu or the Three Kings) and contests such as tonada or traditional dances.
