Basilica of the Sacred Heart

Imposing church in the center of Gijón, and the inside is more impressive than the outside

The foundation stone of the church was laid on November 7, 1913, with José Álvarez Miranda, penitentiary of the diocese of Oviedoy, already recommended as bishop of León, officiating, although by that time the façade and side walls had already been cemented and raised to a certain height. Most of the construction was carried out between 1918 and 1922. At the beginning of 1919 the vaults were closed, at the end of the year the bell tower was completed, on January 4, 1920 the statue of the Sacred Heart that crowns the temple was placed and in the following months the roof was laid.
