Hiking

This chapel was built in 1925. It replaced an older chapel that had to disappear and played a role in funeral processions. The current chapel was built on land donated by a local resident. It was designed by a headmaster and teacher from Zelem and various parts were made locally. For example, the turret was made by the old craft school of Sint-Jansberg. The chapel is also known in Zelem as Chapel Mother of Sorrows and the Schanskapel after the redoubt that once stood in the immediate vicinity. The chapel Our Lady of Seven Woes or Chapel Mother of Sorrows is also popularly known as the Schanskapel. The name refers to the Nieuwe Schans, an entrenchment, over 1 hectare in size, surrounded by a deep moat, ramparts and drawbridge. During the restless 17th century, residents from the surrounding area sought shelter during raids. (corner Steenbergstraat-Schansstraat).
