The Balatkas was designed in 1854 by Alphonse Balat, the court architect of King Leopold II. Initially, it was located in the Leopold Park in Brussels and housed giant water lilies (Victoria amazonica). In 1878 the greenhouse moved to the Brussels herb garden. In the 1940s she came to Meise. Alphonse Balat would later also design the Royal Greenhouses in Laeken. The Balatkas served as finger exercise.
