The upper section was called "Quai des Bateliers" from 1792 onwards. From 1794 onwards, it was renamed "Quai du 23 Thermidor" and from 1803 onwards "Quai du Bois" (Wooden Docks) because firewood was unloaded and sold there. After the annexation of Alsace-Lorraine in 1872, it was renamed "Boatsman's Wharf" before being renamed "Quai des Bateliers" once again in 1918.
