The 13.5 meter high tower was built around 1270/80 and was once part of the city wall. It is located on the edge of downtown Greifswald at the museum harbor.
At first it was referred to as the prisoner tower, later as the powder tower. Between 1775 and 1826 it was extensively rebuilt by the university and served as an observatory. After that time it was only used as a warehouse.
In the history of this historic tower there have been bitter battles over its possession and use. After it threatened to be demolished, renovation began in the early 1990s.
The harbor master of the museum harbor is now based in the tower.

This building was part of the medieval fortifications that once surrounded Greifswald. The Fangenturm was first mentioned in the town register in 1329 as "Vangentorm". After the facilities in the area of the Schützenwall were leveled in the 18th century and the Hansering was built in the 1970s, the 13.50 meter high tower remained as a rudiment. When the building later no longer met the requirements as a powder tower, the city leased it to the university in 1775, which used the tower as an observatory for a while due to its height and location on the edge of the city.
The battlements were not added until the middle of the 19th century, when the Fangenturm even had to serve as a public toilet.
After extensive maintenance and renovation work in the 1990s, the harbor master of the museum harbor was able to move into his office on the ground floor. He has organizational responsibility for the port with over 50 berths, which are reserved exclusively for seaworthy traditional ships.

The Fangenturm is one of the oldest buildings in Greifswald. It once belonged to the city fortifications and was initially used as a prisoner's tower, hence the name.
