Individual remains of the former city wall as well as towers and gates are still preserved. It ran along the banks of the Jeetze in the northern and eastern parts and along a section of the Salzwedeler Dumme in the west. An inner-city city fortification ran between Salzwedel's old town and new town, some of which have been preserved as the south and west walls of the mayor's courtyard, including the former defensive tower. The former Sieltor on Burgstrasse at the level of the mayor's courtyard was demolished a few years before the turn of the 20th century.
