The Bebelplatz (colloquially: Opernplatz) is a square in the Berlin district of Mitte. It was created in 1740 as part of the Forum Fridericianum planned by Friedrich II and carried out by Georg Wenzeslaus von Knobelsdorff. The Unter den Linden State Opera is located on the 19,000 m² square, which has been named after the SPD leader August Bebel since 1947. It is bordered by the boulevard Unter den Linden in the north, the Prinzessinnenpalais in the east, St. Hedwig's Cathedral and Behrenstrasse in the south and the Old Library and the Old Palace in the west.

This building, the former library, is called "The Commode" by Berliners.

    The urban development website says:
The library, built between 1775 and 1780, which Berliners soon called the "Kommode" because of its unusual concave curved facade, forms the western end of the Forum Fridericianum. King Friedrich II had the builder Georg Christian Unger design the building according to the plans of the Vienna Hofburg. The curved front above the high plinth is effectively accentuated by the Corinthian colossal order of the central and corner projections. The parapet is crowned with sculptural attachments and figurines.

Through memorial plaques embedded in the pavement and a window in the floor where you can see a bookshelf without books, the burning of books by hundreds of authors, such as Heinrich Mann, Erich Kästner, Arthur Schnitzler, Lion, can be seen in the middle of the former Opernplatz (today Bebelplatz) Feuchtwanger, Kurt Tucholsky or Sigmund Freud.
With the book burning on May 10, 1933, students and professors from the university across the street demonstrated their loyalty to the Nazi regime.
