The history of the Hammerstein peninsula is very interesting: During World War II, the Nazis used it as a subcamp of the Bocholt penal camp, where Soviet prisoners of war were treated so badly that 44 of them were buried in Vosshagen. There is a peace chapel next to the cemetery of honor.

After the war, the Hammersten house was a luxury hotel, frequented by numerous celebrities of the time (Konrad Adenauer, Ludwig Erhard, Helmut Kohl, Gustav Gründgens, Heinz Rühmann, Anneliese Rothenberger, Inge Meysel...).
