Winchester City Mill is the official ‘gateway’ into the South Downs National Park, and marks the start (or end) or the South Downs Way.

The Grade II listed building is a restored water mill on the River Itchen that is owned by the National Trust.

Most cyclists and hikers choose to start the South Downs Way in Winchester and end in Eastbourne as the prevailing wind is more likely to be a tailwind this way. It also means that that finale is of the spectacular Seven Sisters and Beachy Head, a fittingly dramatic landscape to end an epic trail.
