The Plaza de Mazarelos in Santiago de Compostela is a historic and significant place. It is known for being the only gate in the medieval city wall that is preserved to this day. In the Middle Ages, this square was an important entry point for pilgrims who arrived in Santiago along the Via de la Plata and it was also the route through which Ribeiro wines entered from the city of Ourense.

The Arch of Mazarelos is the only gate that survives from the medieval city walls. The 'Calixtino' codex reports that wine originating from Orense was brought to the city through this gate. The arch is located between Calle del Cardenal Payá and Plaza de Mazarelos. This structure is located in one of the most visited areas of Santiago de Compostela.
