Bandstand of music inside the Parque de la Alameda.

Although the park receives the generic name of Alameda, it is made up of three distinct parts: the Alameda promenade, the carballeira ("oak grove") of Santa Susana and the Herradura promenade. The unit thus formed is, since the 19th century, the most important point of reference for walks and leisure of the people of Santiago, characterized by being a very cozy space, a kind of natural living room.

Its privileged location, bordering a part of the historic city, and with a magnificent perspective on its west façade - the most monumental -, made it the main urban garden, also notable for the variety and size of its tree and ornamental species, such as the group of oaks, the splendid eucalyptus trees or the pergola with views that make up the horse chestnut trees on the Paseo de la Herradura.

The passage of time has left traces in its spatial organization, as can be seen in the central promenade, with corridors for the different social classes of the 19th century; in the almost triumphal arch that gives access to the Paseo de los Leones, or in the arrangement of flower beds, fountains and ponds. And also in its nineteenth-century, modernist and current buildings - Santa Susana chapel, Pilar church, dovecote, bandstand, acoustic bench, etc. -, in the abundance and shapes of its statues and sculptures, and in its furniture, especially the granite benches with artistic cast backing from the well-known Galician factory of Sargadelos.
