A small passenger station in 1864, the project to erect a new building in the Flemish neo-Renaissance style saw the light of day a few years later with the aim of relieving congestion at the North and Allée Verte stations.

An important hub for freight traffic until the 1980s, the development of road transport heralded the decline of the station, with passengers becoming increasingly rare. Closed for a long time, it found a second wind in 2015 with the inauguration of "Train World", an educational train museum which retraces the railway history of Belgium with, as its centerpiece, a locomotive from 1844, the oldest on the continent.

Schaarbeek station is a historic train station in the municipality of Schaarbeek, Brussels. The station was opened in 1873 and was designed by architect Franz Seulen. The station is located on line 26 between the stations of Schaerbeek-Josaphat and Mérode.

The station building was built in neo-Renaissance style and consists of two wings. The left wing was built around 1890 and the right wing in 1913. The building has been included in the monument list of the Brussels Capital Region since 1994 and the facades have been restored.

The station is relatively large, with 13 platforms numbered from 3 to 15. Tracks 1 and 2 were historically used for motorail services transporting passenger cars to destinations mainly in the south of France. These were transferred to Denderleeuw station in 2000 and finally discontinued in 2003.

If you want to learn more about the history of Schaerbeek station, consider visiting the Train World Museum. The museum is located in the renovated Schaarbeek station and houses the oldest locomotive in Europe, along with 21 others.
