At the time of Julius Caesar's conquest of Gaul, Ambiorix was, together with Catuvolcus, king of the Gallic tribe of the Eburones, who are said to have lived "between the Maas and the Rhine", in parts of the present-day Netherlands, Belgium and Germany. He became a mythical Belgian hero from the 19th century onwards because of his resistance against the Romans, as described in Caesar's Commentarii de bello Gallico. The name Ambiorix means Rich King.

Ambiorix poses in Germanic costume, with a battle axe as weapon of choice and a dragon helmet. His feet trample the weapons of the defeated Roman opponents. The enclosure of the statue consists of spears, boar heads and arrows, completely in style with the Celtic traditions.
