The Hofkirche was supposed to be the counter structure to the Catholic Michaelskirche in Munich, built by the Bavarian Duke Wilhelm V and consecrated in 1597. The Neuburg Count Palatine, Wolfgang Wilhelm, first secretly converted to Catholicism in 1613, and a year later also publicly, and after the death of his convinced Protestant father, Gilg Vältin had the shell of the building, which was already in place, which was built according to plans by Siegmund Doctor and Joseph Heinz, transformed into a Catholic Church by the Jesuits he brought to Neuburg.
In 1618 the new church was consecrated to Mary by four bishops, with the name: To Our Lady. Three altars were erected with the altar leaves of the most famous painter at the time, Peter Paul Rubens from Antwerp.
The largest picture by Rubens, the Great Last Judgment on the high altar, is now in the Alte Pinakothek in Munich, and a copy has recently also been made in the right side entrance of the Hofkirche. The other two pictures can be seen in the Flemish Gallery in Neuburg Castle.
The Jesuit Church, court church since 1782, has a small crypt in which seven members of the Wittelsbach family are buried. A large but inaccessible crypt is located under the rear half of the sacred building. Almost 50 Jesuit Fathers rest in it.

A very beautiful and richly decorated church with lots of stucco work. The church is accessible at all times and also houses an annual nativity scene. Due to its building history and furnishings, the Hofkirche Neuburg is one of the most important sacred buildings in southern Germany.
