The motte tower and burial chapel of the Michiels family are located opposite the church in Kessenich in the Kerkstraat.
At this topographically favourable location, there may have been a fortification as early as the 10th century. The oldest visible remains are of an octagonal tower castle from the 12th century that once formed the centre of power of the lordship of Kessenich. The hill was artificially raised and was surrounded by a moat.
In 1899, Baron Willem-Jozef Michiels of Kessenich built the burial chapel of the Michiels family on top of the hill. Tombstones of the various family members who were buried there were placed in the inner walls.

The Kessenich motte is very interesting for several reasons. It is currently being taken care of, restored and, together with part of the center, given a greener look: vrt.be/vrtnws/nl/2022/12/16/kessenich-in-kinrooi- Krijgt -new-green-village-core-and-renovated/

The remains of the castle tower ruin belonged to an octagonal tower castle from the 12th century.
