Of the four city gates that once gave access to the city center, three are still preserved today. In addition, on the sides of the Passeirer Tor - probably the most important of the city gates - remains of the old city wall can be seen. The typical tower-like city gates were placed in such a way that they opened to the different valleys and cities after which they were also named: Vinschgauer Tor, Bozner Tor, Passeirer Tor and Ultner Tor. The Ultner Gate was demolished in the second half of the 19th century during the urban redevelopment of Merano; in its place today is the Theaterplatz.
