Of the four city gates that once provided access to the city center, three are still preserved today. Remains of the old city wall can also be seen on the sides of the Passiria Gate—probably the most important of the city gates. The typically tower-like city gates were positioned to open onto the various valleys and towns, after which they were named: Vinschgau Gate, Bozen Gate, Passiria Gate, and Ulten Gate. The Ulten Gate was demolished in the second half of the 19th century during the urban redevelopment of Merano; Theaterplatz (Piazza Theater Square) now stands in its place.
