The town of Tachov is one of the oldest settlements in western Bohemia. The first mention comes from 1115. In the years 1126 - 31 prince Sobeslav built an important fortress here to protect the way to the Palatinate. The town experienced rapid development during the reign of Přemysl Otakar II, who had a stone castle with a large tower built here. The castle was later rebuilt into a chateau. Below the castle he founded the royal town of Tachov in 1285, which was fortified with a mighty wall that has largely survived to this day.

The dominant of the town is the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary built in the 14th century. The Church of St. Wenceslas stood in front of the city walls. The hospital, first mentioned in 1358, was located in front of the city wall.

The period of the Hussite wars affected the town considerably. A total of five crusades against the Hussites to Bohemia were undertaken, which always ended in victory for the Hussites.

Today Tachov is a lively district town and has around 11,500 inhabitants. The main square of the city is the "Republic Square".

The economic situation of the city of Tachov in Western Bohemia changed from the second half of the 19th century. In 1850, after the hereditary subservience and forced labor of the town's residents were abolished, state offices were set up on the Tachau market square, including the judicial office and the district office. In 1895, the city became a railway station after the opening of the Plan–Tachau local railway. A modest industry developed since the middle of the 19th century.
