In 1622 and 1623, Prince Archbishop Paris Count Lodron had cathedral master builder Santino Solari build the Augustinerpforte, together with the lowest defensive level, on the upper defensive level above the Monikapforte, which was built later. With the construction of the two defensive levels, the northern part of the Mönchsberg could also be included in the city's defense belt. In addition, the extensive defensive structure between Klausenkavalier in the east and Johanneskavalier (the Müllner Schanze) in the west, which reached down to Müllner Hauptstrasse, served to protect the Salzach from enemy attacks.

As I walked around the two hills to the right and left of the Salzach and the city center of Salzburg, I was impressed by the size and might of the fortifications. What a contrast to the playful baroque that is so attractive to tourists.
