The CIVIC TOWER, a noble tower from the 12th century that was built as a symbol of power and social prestige, stood on the course of the Padenna river.

It is possible that it is the result of two different construction phases: the lower part dates from the 6th century – as evidenced by the depth of the original road surface – and the upper part dates from the period between the 12th and 13th centuries.

It is believed to have belonged to the Guiccioli family and was also known as “the butcher” because of the shops that sold game around the Marino Bridge. The building became the property of the municipality as early as 1320 and was therefore called the Bürgerturm.

Due to its height of about 39 meters, it served as a watchtower for centuries, while its bells served as a reminder to citizens on religious and civil occasions as well as during disasters and dangers. A service of great importance since the lower part of the tower housed the bell ringer's apartment between the 15th and the beginning of the 20th century, at least until the building fell into disuse in 1915.

Over its centuries of activity, the bell tower underwent many changes, including to address stability problems possibly caused by the swinging of the bells.

In 2000, the highest part of the tower (approx. 13 meters) was removed to prevent collapse. Although the building is now only 26 meters high, it still suffers today from a slow underground landslide process, which is also responsible for its progressive tilt, earning it the name "Leaning Tower".
