    The Plassey Shipwreck

One of the most unusual and popular spots on Inis Oírr is also one of the newest. The wreck is located at the easternmost point of the island. This rusting colossus was a former cargo ship that struck some rocks near Inis Oírr on March 8th, 1960. No one was killed in the accident, largely due to the bravery of the local islanders who rushed to help, risking their own lives in the rough seas to get the sailors aboard the ships. The ship was later washed up on the rocks by heavy seas and much to the confusion and surprise of many visitors to the island, she now rests here. An aerial view of the wreck is featured in the opening credits of the television series Father Ted.
