Memorial in Ireland to those lost at sea /Memorial to shipwrecked sailors

Memorials are meant to remember, inspire and create a place for reflection. I think back to the memorials we have created to honor not just a single person, but an entire community. I look forward to designing and creating a memorial for you and your community.

The Fisherman's Memorial was hand carved on Inisheer, the smallest of the Aran Islands off the west coast of Ireland. It was created in collaboration with sculptor Alexandra Morosco. The memorial serves as a memorial to those taken by the sea. In particular, island fishermen whose bodies were never found and could not be buried in the community cemetery.

      With gratitude,

      Karin Sprague, letter carver

        An Chloch (The Stone)

Cloch Chuimhneacháin (Memorial Stone), number 16 on our map, was erected in 2013 to honour all those lost to the sea. The stone is ideally located overlooking the Atlantic Ocean on the west coast of Inis Oírr.

It is a beautiful sculpture designed by Alexandra Morosco and carved from specially selected local stone, with the inscription by Karin Sprague. We are eternally grateful to both of them and proud to call them friends.

The inscription on the stone in Irish (Gaeilge) is in two parts. The first: "I gCuimhne ar an dream a thóg an fharraige uainn" translates to "In memory of all those the sea has taken from us".

The second part is from the poem Cuimhní Cinn by the great Aran Island poet Máirtín Ó Direáin (1910 – 1988), one of the most important Irish language poets of the 20th century: “Maireann a gcuimhne fós i m'aigne”, which translates as: “Your memory still lives in my memory”

Alexandra is an amazing sculptor who we met through our shared fascination with stone at the Féile na gCloch (StoneFest) here on Inis Oírr. You can find out more about Alexandra on her website moroscofinearts.com, where you can also see the “An Chloch” story.
