A bailiwick of Paffendorf was first mentioned in 1230.
After 1516, the property was passed through Maria Mascherel von Rode, daughter of Winand V. Mascherel von Rode, lord of Wijnandsrade Castle (near Nuth, Limburg Province), to her husband Wilhelm von dem Bongart, lord of Bergerhausen Castle. Paffendorf Castle remained one of the family's secondary residences for over 400 years. It only became the headquarters at the beginning of the 19th century. The last landlady, Marietta Freifrau von dem Bongart, sold the property to a predecessor company of RWE Power in 1958, when the then Fortuna-Garsdorf opencast mine reached the boundaries of the castle park. In 1818, the von Bongarts bought the Hof Curmen manor, located a few hundred meters north, with all of its land from the last owner, Count von Golstein, and then allowed the manor to fall into disrepair.
