Inside the caldera there are layers of deposits that are evidence of an eruption history that has lasted 3 million years. The lava masses from the individual eruptions filled large areas of the old cauldron with various types of volcanic material. This stunning lunar landscape is home to solidified lava flows, burned-out scoria fields and bizarre rock formations. The rocks have a wide range of colors from light yellow to brown-red to black.
