From a small observation cockpit one has a nice insight into the Karl Heinrich pit.

The Homo erectus from Mülheim-Kärlich was a prehistoric man whose artefacts about a million years old have survived in the “Carl Heinrich” clay pit in Kärlich in Rhineland-Palatinate.
The finds, hand axes made of quartzite and flint, which were recovered in 1980, are the oldest evidence of Homo erectus in Germany.
They point out that the Mülheim-Kärlich area near Koblenz is one of the oldest places in Germany inhabited by people.(Source: Wikipedia)
