Mompesson's Well lies north of the Plague Village of Eyam. When the plague struck in 1665 (brought from London in some damp cloth) and the village cut itself off to prevent it spreading. Food was left here for the inhabitants. The inhabitants in their turn left money in vinegar which acted as a disinfectant. Even so 260 out of the village population of 350 died. The Reverend William Mompesson was the Rector of Eyam.
Due to the villagers of Eyam leaving money in the well to pay for the food they received from neighbouring villages during the plague, the well is still used as a wishing well.
