Plague Cottage is where the first victim of Eyam’s Great Plague, George Vicars, died on September 7, 1665. These days, the pretty cottages and quaint gardens are greatly juxtaposed with the traumatic events of that period.

In the summer of 1665, the plague travelled to Eyam via a package of materials from London. The package was delivered to local tailor Alexander Hadfield. It was opened by his assistant, George, who soon became ill and died a most violent death.

Courageously, the villagers agreed to quarantine themselves from the surrounding settlements. The tactic worked and the plague did not spread beyond Eyam.
