A bracing 9.43-mile loop around the Chatsworth Estate and the moors above it on a classically damp and misty Peak District day. Starting from the grand backdrop of Chatsworth House itself, the route soon climbs past the Hunting Tower (that quirky little castellated folly perched on the edge of the escarpment) and up onto the wilder, open moorland of Chatsworth Edge. The views on a clearer day would have been spectacular – across the Derwent Valley and out towards Bakewell – but today the mist rolled in and out, giving everything a beautifully moody, atmospheric feel. The rocky outcrops, twisted trees, and little waterfalls dripping off the gritstone edges had a proper Wuthering Heights vibe. Be warned: after recent rain, large sections of the path – especially the lower stretches coming back through Stand Wood and along the river – were absolutely ankle-deep (sometimes calf-deep!) in thick, gloopy mud. Proper hiking boots with good grip are essential; trainers would have been a disaster. The climbs are steady rather than brutal, but the mud makes it feel like a workout. Highlights included the atmospheric memorial cross tucked into the bracken, the thunder of water cascading down the rocks near the Emperor Fountain overflow, and the peaceful reforestation area with hundreds of tiny tree tubes marching across the hillside. A proper Peak District adventure: big house, big views (when the cloud lifts), big skies, and even bigger mud

Start/finish: Fairholmes Visitor Centre, Ladybower Reservoir (pay & display, £7 for the full day) The classic clockwise Derwent Edge circuit – quieter in the morning, saves the best rock formations for the golden afternoon light, and finishes with a flat reservoir-side stroll. Route From Fairholmes, follow the road north past Derwent Dam, then take the clear signed path on the right that climbs steadily up through open moorland to the atmospheric cairn on Lost Lad (503 m). Continue along the obvious path to Back Tor (538 m) – the highest point of the walk, with trig point and bronze toposcope giving 360° views over Kinder, Bleaklow and the three reservoirs. Now the highlight: follow the flagged path south along the magnificent Derwent Edge ridge, passing in quick succession: •. Dovestone Tor •. Cakes of Bread •. The famous Salt Cellar (iconic mushroom-shaped boulder) •. Wheel Stones (giant cartwheels in the sky) •. The surreal Woolpacks rock formations After the Woolpacks the path descends gently on stone steps through Grindle Clough (passing the little stone shelter) to meet the reservoir road. Enjoy an easy, scenic waterside wander back side of Derwent Dam to Fairholmes

Highlights include: •. Dramatic waterfalls and cloughs tumbling off the moor •. Expansive views down to Marsden and the iconic Stoolly Tower •. Solitary gritstone outcrops and wind-sculpted rocks •. Quirky moorland sculptures (look out for the curlew and frog carvings) •. The haunting beauty of the reservoirs on foggy days, when the world seems to disappear into cloud
