The polymath Alexander von Humboldt lived in this house from 1792 to 1798. As chief miner in the principalities of Ansbach and Bayreuth, which had become Prussian, he lived alternately in Bad Steben, Goldkronach and Arzberg. He described his stay in Arzberg and his impressions as follows: "I live on the high mountains in Arzberg, a village in the Fichtelgebirge. The deposits are so interesting that I can visit them several times during the year. I stagger with joy."

Friedrich Wilhelm Heinrich Alexander von Humboldt (* September 14, 1769 in Berlin; † May 6, 1859 there) was a German explorer with a field of activity that extended far beyond Europe. In his complete works, which he created over a period of more than seven decades, he created "a new level of knowledge and reflection on the knowledge of the world" and became a co-founder of geography as an empirical science. He was the younger brother of Wilhelm von Humboldt.
