It was one of the most perfidious intelligence operations of the Cold War. Using fake border installations, Czechoslovak state security agents deceived fleeing opponents of the regime into believing they were free. At considerable expense, several fake borders and border stations were set up in the West German-Czech border region. Believing they had survived the worst, the refugees there willingly revealed what they knew: the names of helpers and smugglers.
