Middelburg is located north of Vlissingen on the peninsula Walcheren, in the province of Zeeland.
In addition to the city, the municipality also includes Arnemuiden, Kleverskerke, Sint Laurens and Nieuw-en Sint Joosland.
The vernacular interpretations want to see as a founder of Metelliusburg (Middelburg) a legendary Metellius, as Ulyssingen (Vlissingen) after Ulysses (Odysseus) itself and Zierikzee even named after the home of the Kirke.
The history of Middelburg, however, should begin much later. Celtic settlements on Zeeland and also in the area of Middelburg are possible, a Roman settlement is even more than likely. But even if the first historical traces point to a time of Roman settlement and perhaps even on Arne in the area of today's city may have been this settlement, but can only be spoken of Middelburg with the 9th century.
Because the later city underlying escape castle was built around 880 to 890, as well as other Zeeland festivals, which later became small towns (Oostburg, Oost-Souburg, Domburg and Burgh). From here comes the name of the city, as it was located in the middle between Soeburg (South Castle) and Domburg, in connection with the incursions of the Normans, who were haunting the land at that time.

Middelburg is the capital of Zeeland. It is a city full of monuments and historic buildings. She can look back on a rich past, which can still be seen today in the modern street scene. Numerous events, shops and restaurants make Middelburg a vibrant city. A city in which even the Zeeland people themselves like to go shopping or settle on a café terrace.
