Between St. Peter's Church and the convent courtyard in Riga, a donkey standing on its hind legs roars, carrying a dog on its back, on which a cat meows because a rooster has hopped on its head.
The political sculpture is a gift from Bremen (twin city of Riga) to the Latvian capital.

In the middle of Riga's old town, directly behind St. Peter's Church, you will come across a monument that at first glance seems a little out of place: the Bremen Town Musicians. This sculpture was presented to the city of Riga by Bremen in 1990 as a gift to celebrate the bond between the two Hanseatic cities. But the depiction here has a special symbolism. The animals - donkey, dog, cat and rooster - look through two massive metal bands that symbolize the Iron Curtain. This staging is reminiscent of the Cold War and Perestroika, when Latvia was slowly moving toward independence.

A popular ritual here: many visitors rub the animals' noses or beaks, which is supposed to bring good luck. The bronze figures are therefore already polished in places, which gives them a very special charm.
