    Hiking

The Levant Mine is a disused mine in the St Just mining district with an attached museum where a working balancing steam engine can be viewed. The mine is located near Trewellard, north of St Just in Cornwall, England, directly on the coast, about 10 kilometers northeast of Land's End.

However, the mine cannot be visited every day; advance booking is required online, and admission costs 13 pounds.

Levant Mine and Beam Engine was a copper and tin mine operational between 1820 and 1930. The Cornish beam engine still functions, and is the only one of its kind in the world.

In 1919 a terrible accident occurred. The main lift engine broke suddenly while bringing a large group of miners back to the surface after their shift, killing 31 of them.

The site has gained popularity in recent years due to the filming of scenes from the first season of the Poldark series.

Levant Mine and Beam Engine was active between 1820 and 1930. In the 1980s, the beam engine was restored and is still operated by steam in its original location - well worth a visit.

Copper and tin were mined here. The mine reached a depth of 600m and there were tunnels which dug out under the sea, for approximately 2.5km from the cliff.

The mine is now owned by the National Trust and is part of the Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape World Heritage Site.
