The monumental fountain erected as a memorial to Magdeburg mayor Gustav Hasselbach goes back to a design by the sculptor Karl Albert Bergmeier.

The Ulrichstraße / Kaiserstraße intersection was originally planned as the location - roughly corresponding to the present intersection of Ernst-Reuter-Allee and Otto-von-Guericke-Straße. Because of the then already considered too high for this traffic load, the installation was instead on the Hasselbachplatz in the south of the old town of Magdeburg. The area represents the center of the urban expansion to the south under Hasselbach. The inauguration took place on November 30, 1890. However, the heavy traffic load on Hasselbachplatz also led to the conversion of Hasselbachbrunnen to its present location on Haydnplatz in 1927.

The monumental fountain, erected as a memorial to Magdeburg's mayor Gustav Hasselbach, is based on a design by the sculptor Karl Albert Bergmeier. In 1884, Bergmeier won the competition for the design of the fountain, which was announced in 1883 and was endowed with 1,500 marks.

The location was originally planned to be the intersection of Ulrichstrasse and Kaiserstrasse - roughly equivalent to the current intersection of Ernst-Reuter-Allee and Otto-von-Guericke-Strasse. Because the traffic load was already considered too high at the time, it was instead installed on Hasselbachplatz in the south of Magdeburg's old town. The area represents the center of the city's southward expansion under Hasselbach. The inauguration took place on November 30, 1890. However, the considerable traffic load on Hasselbachplatz led to the Hasselbach fountain being moved to its current location on Haydnplatz in 1927.
