Opened in 1836 on behalf of King Ludwig I in today's art area, the Alte Pinakothek - as it is now known - is home to one of the most important art exhibitions in the world. Paintings slumber here, some of them by painters from the Middle Ages. That is why today it is probably one of the most worth seeing points that Munich has to offer - not only for art lovers.

Very good on foot and also accessible by bike. Fortified paths. Nice to look at from the outside.

The Pinakothek (today: Alte Pinakothek) built on behalf of King Ludwig I was opened in 1836. With it, the architect Leo von Klenze created a pioneering museum building, which with its series of large halls illuminated by skylights and the accompanying cabinets on the north side also became exemplary for other museum buildings. Significantly destroyed in the Second World War, the Alte Pinakothek was rebuilt by Hans Döllgast by 1957, whereby missing parts of the facade were not simply reconstructed, but replaced with unplastered brickwork and thus remained recognizable as 'wounds'. In doing so, he created an impressive example of the architecture of the reconstruction.
