A short rest for your feet, a little stimulation for your brain.

      What is what in space?

A STAR is a massive, self-luminous celestial body made of very hot gas and plasma, such as our sun.

Gaseous molecular clouds condense in several phases, held together by their own gravity and causing them to assume an almost spherical shape.

They emit light and heat over unimaginably long periods of time, but vary greatly in mass and volume, as well as luminosity and color.

The closest neighboring star to our sun is called Proxima Centauri and is already 4.24 light-years away (so light from there takes over four years to reach us – light from the sun takes eight minutes).

A GALAXY is the name given to a vast collection of stars, their planetary systems, gas nebulae, and all other objects bound by gravity. They can be spherical or elliptical, have a lens-like or irregular shape, or even appear as spiral galaxies.

We, too, are at home in such a galaxy, because all the stars we can see with the naked eye belong to our home galaxy, the Milky Way.

It owes its name to a story from ancient Greek mythology, according to which the supreme goddess Hera, while breastfeeding the infant Heracles, sprayed some of her milk across the sky. In fact, we see the milky-bright band because we look from our side arm of the spiral toward the center and thus into a region of infinitely many stars.

The Milky Way comprises approximately 300 billion stars and has a diameter of 100,000 light-years.

Our neighboring galaxy, which is also spiral, is called the Andromeda Galaxy.

GALAXY Clusters, in turn, are collections of many of these giant star formations in relative proximity.

The Milky Way and the Andromeda Galaxy are located in the so-called Local Group, and "proximity" here means a diameter of five to eight million light-years.
