A jack-of-all-trades, that is undoubtedly Olivier the Devil. This statue is also by Jef Claerhout, just like that of Bailiff Spierinck and Tanneken Sconyncx: a devil, a witch and a bailiff thus adorn our hall tower of Tielt.

Olivier de Neckere was born in 1434 in Tielt as the son of a barber, living on the Market. When Lodewijk de Valois, the later French king, met Olivier on the Market, a true adventure began for Olivier: he became a confidant of the French king Louis XI and went to court with him. Cunning as he was, he picked up a piece of the pie for himself here and there. 'Necker' is an old Flemish word for 'devil', hence the name 'Olivier the Devil'. He was a true plaything of the French king. After the death of Louis XI, he was hanged on the gallows of Montfaucon in 1484. His death was a political settling of scores.
