St. Peter's Church is the oldest monument in the city and was built around 1105. The pointed tower is 62m high. The church was destroyed several times and restored to its original state or otherwise. The church houses a number of precious church treasures and church furniture, including a communion rail in Rococo style, sculpted by Pieter Cools from Bruges (1765) and a monumental pulpit, sculpted in Danish oak in 1852 by the Debosschere brothers from Tielt.
