Imagine this happening to you: being accused of witchcraft and not being able to prove your innocence due to the spirit of the times... this happened to Tanneke Sconyncx. The late Middle Ages were also known for quite a few witch hunts. Women who behaved somewhat 'differently' were quickly labelled as 'witches' with all the horrific consequences that entailed.

Tanneke Sconyncx actually stands for Anna De Coninck, popularly known as 'Tanneke Sconyncx'. She was born in 1560 in Gottem and accused of witchcraft. She was tortured to death in Tielt after being captured and died on 2 June 1603. Jealousy and unrequited love were probably the basis for the false accusations. The trial of Tanneke Sconyncx is one of the best preserved witch trials in Flanders.

The statue was created by Jef Claerhout. Originally the statue was located at the Hooghuys, currently it is located at the Hallentoren.

The story of Tanneke Sconynckx was recently beautifully described by Frederic Vermeulen, one of the distant descendants of the woman tortured to death for witchcraft. His book "The Witch of Gottem" provides a special insight into a piece of gruesome history.

The Radio 1 program "Voorproevers" devoted a broadcast to the book, which can be listened to here (or via Spotify): vrt.be/vrtmax/podcasts/radio-1/v/voorproevers/3/wat-als-je-afstamt-van-een--heks---het-verhaal-van-tanneke-scony
