A stone Peter Basilica was built on this site in 785. In 1250 it was extended and converted into a hall church. The formerly Gothic, perhaps even partially Romanesque interior furnishings were also destroyed in the Thirty Years' War. The sculptor's workshop of Heinrich and Christophel Papen recreated the interior around the end of the 17th century.
