This place commemorates the crew of a Halifax bomber and the 2 killed civilians. The aircraft was shot down by a Flak gun and crashed further east of the monument. At the place where the monument has been erected, one of the crew members hid in the canal while five others were taken away as prisoners of war. The aircraft was part of a fleet of bombers and was loaded with 16 bombs of 250 kilos, it was to attack targets in northern France. After the direct hit, the bombs were dropped between Sint-Joris and Ramskapelle, killing two villagers. The pilot maneuvered the airship in such a way that it would not crash into the center of Nieuwpoort in order to spare the civilian population. He succeeded and paid for it with his life.
