Before the arrival of one, drinking water was taken from dirty smelly canals. Because these also served as open sewers, there were regular outbreaks of cholera and typhus. Later it got a little better. The first water pipeline in the Netherlands was laid in 1853, but it was not Woerden's turn until 1905. This 28 meter high water tower ensured a constant pressure in the water supply until 1979.
