Due to the flooding of the Yser plain at the end of October 1914, the Germans had to stop their advance and abandon many captured positions west of the Yser. However, the petroleum tanks remained in the hands of the Germans all this time. The carcasses of these two oil reservoirs dominated the plain and already served as a strategic vantage point and as a fixed location for German machine guns aimed at the Trench of Death. Today, 500 meters past the Trench of Death, we find two replicas (on a scale of 50%).
