Due to the flooding of the Yser plain at the end of October 1914, the Germans were forced to halt their advance and abandon many captured positions west of the Yser. However, the petroleum tanks remained in German hands throughout this period. The remains of these two oil tanks dominated the plain and served as a strategic vantage point and a fixed position for German machine guns targeting the Trench of Death. Today, 500 meters beyond the Trench of Death, we find two replicas (at a 50% scale).
