An interesting anecdote about the Trench of Death in Diksmuide concerns the Belgian soldier Adiel Debeuckelaere. During a heavy attack in 1917, when the Germans tried to break through the Belgian lines, Debeuckelaere held out in the trenches despite heavy shelling and gas attacks.
