An interesting anecdote about the Trench of Death in Diksmuide concerns the Belgian soldier Adiel Debeuckelaere. During a heavy attack in 1917, when the Germans tried to break through the Belgian lines, Debeuckelaere held out in the trenches despite heavy shelling and gas attacks. His courageous conduct and determination to defend his position, even when many of his comrades were wounded or killed, was later recognized with a decoration.

The Mousetrap was impregnable and a uniquely built defense system across the entire front line. On the parapet of the Mouse Trap, you will also find one of the demarcation posts. After WWI, these demarcation posts were placed at regular intervals along the entire front line from Nieuwpoort to Alsace - France as a reminder.
